ALS 199 (U-Engage)

Inspired by the internationally renowned storytelling efforts of amateur photographer Brandon Stanton’s "Humans of New York" photo-journalism campaign, this U-Engage course capitalizes on the excitement and energy surrounding our brand new OSU Cascades campus in Bend. Commensurate with U-Engage's "project-based learning" mandate to expose students to a "real-world problem or compelling question in [an] area of expertise," this course asks the question: "What stories does the OSU Cascades community have to tell, and how can we bring those stories to light?"

In addition to the classic U-Engage model, wherein students are exposed to different services our campus has to offer, as well as student success strategies, you will become competent communicators in a variety of forms. You will engage in activities and assignments that require meeting campus community members, ethically approaching new peers and new situations, recording sound and capturing image, storytelling, editing and peer review, writing for the web, crafting emails, designing flyers, and interpersonal communication. This work will culminate in an @HumansofOSUCascades Instagram takeover, wherein teams will post a story a week on an interviewed OSU Cascades community member.
